What happens when brilliant weather, some incredible golf courses, and great friends align? You get the ultimate Queensland getaway! When we aligned our friend’s 50th birthday in Byron Bay with our friends from Blairgowrie holidaying in Port Douglas, we knew this trip was going to be something special. From scenic coastal drives to incredible dining and plenty of banter on the fairways, here is how our tropical adventure unfolded.
Part 1: Sunshine Coast Celebration & Noosa Cruising
Our trip started on a high note in Byron Bay. The weather greeted us with clear blue skies and warm breezes, setting the perfect mood for a celebration.
- Birthday Function at Crystalbrook Resort: We kicked off the journey in style with a birthday celebration at the stunning Crystalbrook Resort. Surrounded by lush greenery and a vibrant atmosphere, it was the perfect way to toast to a significant birthday year. Before heading to Noosa we stopped off to meet friends for a quick bite of lunch and had some additional company on the outdoor deck.
- Drive to Noosaville & Noosa River Boat Trip: The next day, we took a scenic drive down to Noosaville. We spent a glorious afternoon out on the water with a Noosa River boat trip with our friends who loaded us on their boat the moment we arrived. Taking in the picturesque views, some photographic opportunities and enjoying a few cold beverages together. What a start to the holiday!
- Asian Fusion Dinner: We capped off our time in Noosa with a sensational Asian dinner, diving into bold, fresh flavors and reminiscing over the days when would eat these delicacies when we lived in Hong Kong and Macau.
- Golf at the Par 3 Course: Before hitting the highway north, I snuck in a casual, fun-filled round of golf at a Par 3 course just outside Noosa. It was relaxed, full of good and bad shots, and a great warm-up for the fairways ahead. Almost got another hole in one!
Part 2: The Coastal Road Trip North
With the Sunshine Coast in our rearview mirror, we pointed the car north for an epic coastal drive. Stopping at coastal towns along the way made the journey just as memorable as the destination.
- Road Trip Pitstops: We took our time driving north, enjoying overnight stays in Hervey Bay, Rockhampton, Mackay, and Townsville.
- Fairway Action Along the Way: We couldn’t pass up the chance to sample the local courses. We squeezed in two fantastic rounds—first in Hervey Bay under bright, sunny skies and with some kangaroos for company. And later in Townsville, where the cooler weather in the afternoon saw us finish before hitting the 18 holes. Biggest GPO I have seen in a country town and some classic pubs.
Part 3: Port Douglas Magic with Blairgowrie Friends
Arriving in Port Douglas felt like stepping back into paradise. Reuniting with our Blairgowrie friends made the tropical magic even better.
- Our Sanctuary – Kaaltier House (Ulysses): We checked into the breathtaking Kaaltier House (Ulysses). Having such an amazing home base to relax, unwind, and host sunny afternoon drinks and a BBQ made all the difference. A heated pool and a real “lux” feeling!
- Port Douglas Golf Marathon: Port Douglas proved to be a golfer’s dream. We tackled three distinct and spectacular courses:
- Mossman Golf Club: A charming, lush course set against tropical rainforest backdrops.
- Sheraton Mirage Golf Club: World-class resort golfing surrounded by iconic palm trees and coastal breezes.
- Palmer Sea Temple: A challenging, but now somewhat ageing golf course
- World-Class Dining: Port Douglas treated us to some truly unforgettable culinary experiences. We indulged in exceptional meals at:
- Melaleuca: Fresh, coastal dining under the trees.
- Epicurean: Exquisite bites and fantastic wine.
- Nautilus: An enchanting, open-air dining experience surrounded by lush palms.
- The Tin Shed: A relaxed spot right on the water, perfect for casual sunset drinks, great food, and plenty of laughs with the crew.
Part 4: A Warm Farewell
After our stay in Port Douglas, the fun wasn’t quite over. We spent a further few days relaxing at our friends’ place, soaking up every last bit of tropical warmth, sharing stories, and making final memories before wrapping up the trip.
Eventually, it was time to pack our bags, head down to Cairns Airport, and board our Jetstar flight back home to Melbourne—recharged, sun-kissed, and back to the cooler climes of Melbourne.
