Winter Warmth in Port Douglas

Getting There

We flew Jetstar from a very cold Melbourne on a July morning to land at Cairns airport nearly 3 hours later. A nice balmy 25 C but a bit breezy. Knowing that we needed to travel to Port Douglas from the airport and wanting some independence while we were there, a car rental service seemed to be our best bet. Our friends recommended the services of Gem Car Rental who provided an amazing service. We were picked up at the airport and driven to their office in Yorky’s Knob, filled out the forms and we were on our way in a small Kia sedan which set us back about $80 per day.

Accommodation

We were lucky enough to be staying with friends at a small group of apartments, 5 minutes drive from the heart of Port Douglas. Fantastic accommodation with our own bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite. Good friends, good food, golf for a couple of days and the Saints beat the Bombers on the Saturday.

Golf

We played golf on the Monday at Mossman Golf Club with a group of 6 friends and enjoyed a couple of beers after only scoring 30 Stableford points on course. A flat course but lined with trees to provide the wayward golfer some extra challenge. I came back on the Tuesday, thinking that a second attempt was sure to improve my score but alas, 26 points and a couple of lost balls.

Exercise

I did a run along the 4 mile beach a couple of time while I was there – one day heading into the town via the lookout path that climbs from the beach along the coast line – amazing views.

Port Douglas Lookout

The run back in the other direction along the beach was not quite as beautiful but anything along the 4 mile beach with the surf next to you as you jog along with the sun on your back is fabulous.

Getting Back

We were lucky enough to be staying with some other friends on Tuesday in Palm Cove, so drove from Port Douglas to Palm Cove on Tuesday afternoon. A simple 45 minute drive and had the pleasure of being put up at the lovely Sea Temple. A night of cards followed by a lovely meal at Vivo and were off the next morning to Yorky’s Knob to drop the car and be driven back to the airport. A great break and nice warm weather!
